Fire Safety

Fire emergencies can occur during meetings, practices, social activities, travel lodging, or everyday building use. Knowing how to respond quickly and correctly helps prevent injuries and saves lives.

If a Fire Alarm Sounds

Evacuate Immediately

  • Leave the building right away
  • Do not stop to collect personal belongings
  • Never use elevators
  • Proceed to the nearest safe exit

Assist Others When Possible

  • Assist individuals who need support only if you can do so safely
  • Do not put yourself at risk attempting to rescue
  • Follow posted evacuation routes and instructions

Do Not Re-Enter

  • Do not return to the building for any reason
  • Re-enter only when emergency personnel clearly state it is safe

If You See Smoke or Fire

  • Evacuate the building
  • Call 911 once you are safely outside

Fire Extinguishers

  • Only attempt to use a fire extinguisher if you are trained
  • Only use an extinguisher if:
    • The fire is small and contained
    • You have a clear exit path
    • Your safety is not compromised

Never

  • Re-enter a burning or smoky building
  • Ignore alarms thinking they are false
  • Pressure anyone to remain inside or delay evacuation
