The Major Campus Events Committee (MCEC) is a small cohort of 12-15 students who work collaboratively to plan the Ohio Union’s traditional major campus events at Ohio State. This experience is open to any student, but preference will be given to students interested in beginning a career in event planning or have an interest in the field of Student Affairs. MCEC can also serve as a capstone experience for your campus involvement.

As a member of MCEC, you will have the opportunity to be the chair of a major campus event or participate in the marketing for events as listed below. You will rank these opportunities and be selected based on your application criteria combined with your experience level. Once selected, you will execute the large-scale event from planning, delegating, budgeting, and project management to execution with the help of the MCEC team. After the event, you will have the chance to evaluate the event with a committee of students and staff.

Leadership Chair Responsibilities:

Welcome Week:  Responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating volunteers, and marketing Welcome Week events, including, but not limited to, Campus Locator Booths and Buckeye Kickoff. Responsible for leading the Welcome Week committee meetings with campus partners.

Student Involvement Fair: Autumn and Spring:  Responsible for planning and implementing the Involvement Fair during Welcome Week and the Involvement Fair in the Spring. Other responsibilities include communication with student groups, nonprofit organizations, and University departments, soliciting sponsorship, soliciting student organization/university department/community business participation, and overall event coordination.

Homecoming Parade:  Responsible for planning and implementing the Homecoming Parade. Other responsibilities include soliciting sponsorship, coordinating volunteers, and overall event marketing. Work closely with Student Alumni Council.

Commencement Week: Autumn and Spring: Responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating volunteers, and marketing Commencement Week events, including the Things You Never Got to See Tour and the Commencement Eve Ceremony. Work closely with Student Alumni Council.

Beat Michigan/ Buckeye Nation Week: Responsible for planning a week long of events in order to highlight the traditions that make our university great and unique including but not limited to: Meal Packing event, T-shirt exchange, Sip and Paint and Late Night Brunch. 

Marketing: Coordinate the marketing efforts for each Major Campus Events Committee event. Responsible for managing the Beat Michigan website and corresponding with other campus constituents. Other responsibilities may include soliciting sponsorship, coordinating volunteers, and overall event marketing.

Spring Semester 2018

  • MCEC New Member Retreat during the Spring Semester and Summer 2018
  • Mandatory 8-week Program/Event Trainings, Wednesdays 5 – 7 p.m.

  • Weekly MCEC Meeting, Thursdays 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Summer 2018

Autumn Semester 2018

  • Volunteering at all MCEC events
  • Weekly/bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with advisor
  • Weekly general MCEC meetings
  • Monthly Signature Events Collaborative meetings

Spring Semester 2018

  • Volunteering at all MCEC events
  • Weekly/bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with advisor
  • Weekly general MCEC meetings
  • Monthly Signature Events Collaborative meetings

General Expectations for Major Campus Events Committee:

All positions are volunteer positions.

Student applicants must maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA throughout the length of commitment.

All student chairs must also participate in the Signature Events Collaborative. The Signature Events Collaborative is a group of student leaders responsible for putting on events that are partially funded by the Student Activity Fee.

Students will be involved in the planning, execution of, and volunteering at of all Major Campus Events.
