Spring Into Service 2021

Spring Into Service 2021 will be a week-long event that focuses on environmental sustainability and climate change. The week will consist of a virtual educational event, social media challenges, and opportunities to connect with local agencies in need of volunteers. See below for more information about our events!

Climate Change Research Panel - Thursday, April 15th, 2021 6:30 PM

  • This virtual educational panel will feature Ohio State faculty doing research on topics related to climate change and environmental sustainability.

Meet our Panelists!

  • Dr. Joyce Chen
    • Dr. Joyce Chen is an Associate Professor with the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics at Ohio State. As a researcher, Dr. Chen is involved in many projects including an inter-disciplinary study on climate-induced migration in Bangladesh and the potential for cooperative behavior within households. Dr. Chen’s research focuses on the relationship between migration, climate change, economic development, and the intra-household allocation of resources.
    • Additionally, Dr. Chen is actively involved in efforts to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion within academia. In a recent NPR article discussing the disproportionate impact COVID-19 has had on women, Dr. Chen was interviewed about her experience as an academic, educator, and mother.

  • Dr. Robyn Wilson
    • Dr. Robyn Wilson is a Professor of Risk Analysis and Decision Science with the School of Environment and Natural Resources at Ohio State. Dr. Wilson’s research focuses on the individual decision-making process under risk and uncertainty. Currently, Dr. Wilson is studying adaptation to climate-exacerbated hazards with a specific focus on the conservation of private lands. Dr. Wilson is a member of the Sustainability Institute Faculty Advisory Board, the incoming President of the Society for Risk Analysis, and a member of the National Academies Board on Environmental Change and Society.

  • Dr. Bryan Mark
    • Dr. Bryan Mark is a Professor with the Department of Geography at Ohio State. He is also the current state climatologist of Ohio. As state climatologist, Dr. Mark maintains Ohio’s climatic archive and all current state climatic data. The state climatologist position is a part of the State Climate Office of Ohio which seeks to connect people and climate through education, outreach, and research. Dr. Mark’s Glacier Environmental Change research group is studying the physical and human dimensions of environmental change in glacierized landscapes in sites all along the American Cordillera, as well as Africa and Asia.

Social Media Challenge - All week! 

  • Follow Pay It Forward on Instagram (@payitforwardosu) to join in on the challenge! Pay It Forward is challenging you to participate in daily sustainable behaviors throughout the week. The activities include the following:
    • Do some research on climate change
    • Pick up any litter you see on campus
    • Avoid single-use, plastics for the day
    • Subscribe to an environmental newsletter or podcast
    • Shop second-hand in Columbus
    • Use a reusable mug or water bottle
    • Skip the plastic straw with your drink
    • Bring a reusable bag while shopping
    • Incorporate a new sustainable habit into your daily hygiene routine
    • Show your house plants some love or buy one for your room 
  • Complete 3 activities and receive a free Spring Into Service reusable tote bag. Complete 5 activities and receive a free tote AND get entered into a raffle to receive a $15 BuckID Cash Card. 
  • After completing the activities, complete the Spring Into Service Social Media Challenge Form to report how many activities you completed and enter your name for your tote and raffle entry.

Connect with Local Agencies!

  • Pay It Forward will be compiling a list of local agencies that are in need of volunteers! Although Pay It Forward cannot provide transportation to these agencies, we encourage you to reach out to these agencies if you are interested in volunteer with them.

  • Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed
    • Tree Planting - Ohio School for the Deaf
      • Saturday, April 10th 9 AM - 12 PM
      • 500 Morse Road, Columbus, OH 43212
      • They have 1,800 tree saplings that need to be planted! Please bring a shovel and gloves if possible.

    • Tuttle Park Clean Up
  • Short North Alliance
    • Various volunteer opportunities available! 
    • Can accommodate student volunteers anytime from 7 AM - 11 PM seven days a week (most of the nedds are in the morning)

  • Friends of Sawmill Wetlands
    • Volunteer opportunity pulling invasives and preping areas for additional pollinator plants
      • April 14th and 15th

Sustainable Student Organizations

  • The Sierra Club Student Coalition at The Ohio State University is a student organization dedicated to educating the public of important, timely environmental concerns and to encouraging green policies on campus and in the local community.   • Net Impact is a sustainability in business student organization that connects students to professionals who have sustainability related careers. The club also has student led project groups that allow students to gain leadership experience and create opportunities to make a positive difference on campus.
