A Good Start Family Literacy Tutoring program meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 pm. The children who enroll are provided with a snack when they arrive and then participate in group and individual tutoring based on need and available tutors. At 5:30 p.m. dinner is served. Tutors are welcome to stay and share the meal with the children. Developing a relationship of trust and respect is of upmost importance in A Good Start Programs. Our programs focus our efforts on providing quality literacy experiences for children and families in the Weinland Park and Linden neighborhoods. We accept children and families from all backgrounds, religions, socio economic groups, and family structures. Families are not asked to pay. Families are our partners in these experiences. Supervised by the Director of Tutoring, tutors will only directly tutor depending on their level of ability and their comfort with material and curriculum. Each tutor will be interviewed and attend a training where they will submit an application and a resume (if possible) to help match their skills and experiences with students and clarify their role in the program. Some tutors may be asked to observe, assist with non-tutoring tasks (snack/meal or materials prep) and/or support tutoring until their skills match a student's needs. Tutors will be required to have a BCI on file (funding for this may be provided). Interested tutors with education and/or experience in education, early childhood development or other related and applicable fields of study will be given priority consideration to provide individual tutoring.
