Are you ready to learn and grow as a leader? Leadership Week is a university-wide celebration of leadership development. All sessions are open to all students – but this page includes a list of all events focused around the Graduate & Professional student audience for Leadership Week 2020.. All sessions fit into one or more of the five themes of Leadership Week: Career Development, Community Engagement, Inclusion, Personal Exploration, and Wellness. All sessions will be offered in a virtual format

Live From the KBK: Career Development Edition

Join us every morning of Leadership Week to learn more about the five themes of Leadership Week and what those look like in practice for university leaders. For this session, we will be diving deeper into the Career Development theme. Developing your leadership also means that you are developing skills that will serve you in your future career path. Programs focused on Career Development will help you understand the relationships between you professional trajectory and the development of your leadership skills.

Networking

11am-12pm

Networking is essential to career success but it can feel intimidating. This presentation will highlight some of the barriers people face when it comes to networking and several networking tips that can help you to meet your future colleagues.

Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: Time and Stress Management

12:30-1:30pm

This workshop is critical for students because of the many stressors they'll be exposed to in the college learning environment. Participating students will define stress, examine examples of stressors they have or may encounter, and develop self-care and time-management strategies to address these stressors. These tools will enable them to more successfully balance new responsibilities and academic deadlines.

Student Org Essentials: Fostering Wellbeing in Your Student Organization

5:30-6:30pm

There is a new dynamic to adjust to when the Work/Life balance becomes Work/Org/Life balance. Join the student org community on October 5 as we cover the topic of being well while being involved. We will discuss tips for prioritizing personal wellbeing as well as opportunities to enhance organizational wellbeing for leaders and members.

For this session, we will be diving deeper into the Community Engagement theme. We believe that leadership is a process that can be learned, with the ultimate goal of bettering our communities. Programs focused on Community Engagement explore the various ways in which you, as a student, can be engage in your community in positive and meaningful ways.

Interviewing

This interview skills workshop is designed to help students prepare for job or graduate school interviews. We will provide techniques and strategies for interview preparation, answering interview questions and how to act before, after and during your interview. Special attention will be paid to the newly popular world of virtual interviewing.

Making Philanthropy and Service Meaningful in Sorority and Fraternity Life

5:30-6:30pm

Do your members struggle to get excited and engaged with your chapters' service initiatives? Do you want your brothers/sisters to go from being a passive community member to an active citizen in the community? Join us as we discuss how to make philanthropy and service more meaningful in your Sorority & Fraternity experience.  After attending this session participants will have an understanding of the many facets of the service world and how you can shake up your philanthropy/service programs to have a greater impact on your members and the community. Attendees will leave this session with ideas on how to engage with service, tools on how to process experiences, and the ability to draw a deeper connection between service/philanthropy initiatives to your organization's values.

Keith B. Key Center Open House

6:30-8pm

The KBK CSLS Open House will provide students and student organizations with an interactive info session about the resources available to them (such as the Student Organization Success Framework) while getting involved on campus. The program will also give students access to virtually connect with each student organization housed in the CSLS and learn more about the various groups.

Join us every morning of Leadership Week to learn more about the five themes of Leadership Week and what those look like in practice for university leaders. For this session, we will be diving deeper into the Inclusion theme. Leadership is practiced with groups of diverse people with distinct experiences and worldviews. As such, it is critical for leaders to integrate inclusive practices into their leadership style. Programs focused on Inclusion will help you learn more about diverse identities, power and privilege, and how to be a more inclusive leader.

Self-Awareness and Your Strengths

10-11am

This workshop prompts participants to practice intentional reflection and self-assessment. Participants will explore various aspects of their needs, strengths, and interests, and work in small groups virtually to discuss their results and design goals related to the reflections.

Showing Employers How You Lead

10:45-11:45am

One way to stand out when applying for internships or jobs is using your resume to highlight your leadership experience. Career Coach Mark Runco will show you how to appeal to employers by highlighting ways you’ve led, whether as a member of a student organization, at work, on a team, or anywhere else. Introduction to Activism: A Political Engagement Primer

Building a Career Vision as a Graduate Student

What is all of this education going to be for? Do I want Industry or Academia? What will I do if I can't land my dream job? Having a career vision can help to answer these questions and more. Thank You For Coming to My TED Talk: Public Speaking Skills

In this workshop, participating students will come to recognize themselves as public speakers. Through small-group practices in speaking, participating students will develop the confidence to share their ideas and better understand how to communicate those ideas with varying audiences. This workshop is ideal for students seeking practical tools to articulate themselves in new settings.

Financial Wellness

As we continue to navigate through uncertain times, what can cause stress and anxiety is regarding our financial wellness. Through this presentation, participants will engage in reflective activities, and learn about resources and tips to provide a solid foundation on personal finances.

For this final session, we will be diving deeper into the Wellness theme. Effective leadership and wellness go hand in hand - but sometimes leaders need a reminder about the valuable relationship between the two. Programs focused on Wellness will help you learn more about our 9 Dimensions of Wellness and how to integrate wellness into your leadership style.

Leadership and Vulnerability

In this workshop, students will learn to embrace discomfort and vulnerability as strengths. College students are exposed to many opportunities to develop their leadership efficacy, through student organizations, community service, and even academic engagements like research or living-learning communities. By embracing vulnerability, students will feel empowered to be their authentic selves which will translate into better outcomes both personally and professionally.

Engaging Alumni as Mentors

12:00-1:00pm

This session will provide a framework for engaging alumni as mentors to students in your organization. Alumni are eager to connect with current students and provide guidance through their Ohio State experience and career development. The presenter will highlight campus and virtual resources to connect with alumni, in addition to providing guidance on developing a structured mentoring program to meet the needs and interests of mentors and mentees.

“Actually, We Do Care”: Young People in Politics

12:30-1:30pm

Too often, people write off Millennials and Gen Z as apathetic or uninteresting in politics. From the youth movement that mobilized for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign to the groundswell of youth voter turnout in the 2018 midterm elections, we know that this this isn’t true. Come to this workshop to learn more about why young folks should be civically engagement, and how to make a plan for your own civic engagement.
