Uncovering Microaggressions in Fraternity/ Sorority Life and Higher Education

3-4pm

Many Fraternity/Sorority communities are working toward creating a more equitable and just chapter/council cultures. Sometimes it can be easy to identify when something is offensive and sometimes it can be hard to notice. Together let’s uncover microaggressions, which are often the result of unconscious biases in the dominant culture, and frequently cause harm (intended and unintended). Effectively addressing microaggressions in Fraternity/Sorority Life can help dismantle systems of oppression and create inclusive spaces for members and potential new members. In this session, we will examine different types of microaggressions that affect Fraternity/Sorority Life and Higher Education settings as well as identify some microaggressions we might be responsible for using without knowing it.

This interactive session will engage attendees in conversations about the taboo topics of social class and fraternity/sorority life and challenge individuals to assist in advocacy around the harm of classism in our communities.
